FAQs
What is a classical guitar?
Classical guitars are timeless instruments dating back to the 16th century with the Spanish vihuela. The history of modern classical guitars (those with six strings), dates back to the 18th century, with composers and performers like Fernando Sor, Mauro Giuliani & Matteo Carcassi. The instrument was later popularized further by guitarists Francisco Tárrega and Andrés Segovia.
Classical guitars are a type of acoustic guitar, with a wider neck and a slightly smaller wooden body. Typically, the neck meets the body at the 12th fret.
These instruments are strung with nylon strings, which are softer to play than metal strings. They produce a warm, mellow sound and allow intricate finger-picking melodies, harmonies, and fast passages. Nylon strings are used over metal strings because they place less tension on the instrument, which can be damaging in the long run.
What is the difference between classical and flamenco guitars?
Although they are both types of acoustic guitars, there are some key differences in construction, sound, and playing style.
Classical guitars produce a warm and mellow sound often attributed to classical music. These guitars are played delicately, perfect for melodic fingerstyle patterns and arpeggios.
On the other hand, Flamenco guitars create a brighter, more percussive and passionate sound often associated with Flamenco music. These guitars are played with more aggression and rhythm and involve many percussive techniques like rasgueados and golpes, making them perfect for the intense and lively nature of Flamenco music.
What is the difference between a spruce and cedar top classical guitar?
There are a few differences between the two; spruce can have a clearer, more defined tone, whereas cedar can be warmer and more mellow. However, the differences aren't always that great. Generally speaking, you'll get a better indication of the quality by focusing on the timbres of the two woods used.
